CASE STUDY: Mulwala Solar Farm

Delivering Grid Connection Infrastructure

The Mulwala Solar Farm is a renewable energy project located near Lambruk, 2km north of Mulwala in southern New South Wales. The facility spans 215 hectares and produces approx. 66 GWh of clean energy annually (enough to power more than 20,000 homes). The project played a key role in enabling renewable energy generation while supporting long-term infrastructure outcomes for the regional network and community.

Outcome

Intium successfully delivered the Mulwala Solar Farm connection infrastructure, achieving energisation on schedule and providing a high-quality asset that will provide long-term value for the regional network and community.

Stakeholder Collaboration

Intium worked closely with key stakeholders, including European Energy and Essential Energy, providing seamless delivery and integration into the network.

  • Coordinated approach across developer, network operator and delivery teams
  • Alignment on technical, regulatory and operational requirements
  • Strong partnership model supporting efficient decision-making and execution

Intium’s Scope of Work

Intium delivered critical connection infrastructure for European Energy’s Mulwala Solar Farm, successfully achieving energisation on time.

Under a long-term Build, Own, Operate and Maintain (BOOM) model, Intium was responsible for delivering critical connection infrastructure for the Mulwala Solar Farm, including:

  • Design, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of a 22kV switching station

  • Delivery of a two-kilometre underground cable connecting the solar farm to Essential Energy’s local distribution network (Mulwala Zone Substation)

  • Integration of infrastructure to support reliable and efficient grid connection

  • Delivery of a two-kilometre underground cable connecting the solar farm to Essential Energy’s local distribution network (Mulwala Zone Substation) via a privately owned feeder, owned and operated by Intium, providing enhanced control over critical connection infrastructure.

Early Engagement

Intium was engaged early in the project lifecycle, contributing to:

  • Environmental approvals and planning considerations

  • Resolution of technical complexities associated with network integration

  • Development of a connection solution aligned with local network requirements

This early involvement enabled smoother project delivery and reduced downstream risks during construction and commissioning.

Delivery Performance

Intium demonstrated strong execution on the Project from the outset:

  • Rapid mobilisation with 1,600 metres of underground cable route excavated within the first four days

  • Construction activities progressed on time and on budget throughout the entire end-to-end delivery

  • Intium maintained delivery momentum through to pre-commissioning and final energisation

This disciplined delivery ensured the Project met its key milestones.
